The Zhejiang University–University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Institute (ZJUI) is a jointly operated engineering college located at Zhejiang University’s International Campus in Haining, China. The institute delivers cross-disciplinary education with faculty and curriculum contributions from both Zhejiang University and UIUC.
Dual Degree Majors

How to Apply
Applications must be submitted through the Online Application System for International Students.
Steps:
- Create an account and complete the online form.
- Upload required documents:
- Admission essay
- High school transcripts
- Standardized test scores (ACT, SAT, IB, A-Level, or equivalent)
- English proficiency test scores (TOEFL/IELTS) if English is not the applicant’s native language
- Submit the application and pay the application fee.
Applications will only be reviewed once all materials and payments are submitted.
Eligibility Requirements
General Requirements
- Non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport
- Under 25 years of age
- High school graduate (or graduating in 2025; graduation certificate must be provided upon enrollment)
- In good physical and mental health
Citizenship Rules
Applicants must comply with Ministry of Education Document No. 12 (2020).
This applies particularly to:
- Former Chinese citizens, including those from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan
- Individuals born abroad to Chinese parents
They must:
- Have obtained foreign citizenship before April 30, 2021, and
- Have lived outside China for at least two full years (nine or more months per year) between April 30, 2021 and April 30, 2026
If Chinese authorities determine an applicant still holds Chinese nationality, the offer of admission will be cancelled.
Language Requirements
- No Chinese language requirement (programs are taught in English)
- English proficiency scores are required if English is not the applicant’s native language
Additional Notes:
- Standardized tests such as SAT, IB, GCE A-Level, and ACT are accepted
- Predicted A-Level results may be submitted initially, but final scores will be required
- All documents must be in English or Chinese; notarized translations are required for other languages
- Do not mail hard copies; mailed documents will not be processed
- Video interviews and supplementary documents may be requested
Scholarships
ZJUI International Excellence Scholarships
Outstanding applicants may receive a partial tuition waiver of CNY 80,000 to CNY 200,000 per year.
- Scholarships are reviewed annually
- Renewable for up to four years
- Scholarships do not cover any expenses during the exchange period at UIUC
Admission Process
- Selection is based on high school performance, interview results, English proficiency, and overall application strength.
- Admission notifications are released in batches. Applicants can track their status through the online system.
- Applicants who receive a Pre-Admission Notice must prepay the first-year tuition through the online system. If online payment is not possible, payment must be wired to the university account and proof uploaded.
- Final Admission Notices will be available in late June 2026. Visa documents will be emailed to the address provided in the application.
Refund Policy:
- Tuition prepayment is non-refundable if the student withdraws or fails to register.
Registration
- Programs begin in late August or early September 2026
- Students must register according to the date stated in the Admission Notice
- Original high school diploma and English test certificates will be verified on arrival
- Failure to provide original documents will result in disqualification
Medical Insurance
- Cost: RMB 800 per academic year
- Mandatory for all international students studying for one semester or more
- Students who do not purchase the required insurance will not be registered
- Detailed instructions will be provided before registration

Overview
Zhejiang University is a public university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. It is affiliated with the Ministry of Education. The university is part of Double First-Class Construction, Project 985, and Project 211.
Zhejiang University is a public institution that traces its roots back to 1897. The university is located in Hangzhou, the capital of China’s Zhejiang province, about 110 miles southwest of Shanghai. More than 47,000 students attend the university, and around half of them study at the undergraduate level. Zhejiang University comprises seven campuses: the main campus, Zijingang, and the Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan and Haining campuses. Tuition costs are higher for international students and vary by subject and degree level. University housing is available for both undergraduate and graduate students.
The university offers programs in a variety of disciplines, including engineering, the humanities and medicine. In all, students can choose from more than 120 undergraduate programs and well over 300 master's programs. Doctoral programs are also available. The primary language of instruction is Chinese, but Zhejiang University also offers more than a dozen master’s degree programs taught in English. The English-taught master’s offerings include programs in business, China studies and engineering. The university follows a four-term academic calendar. University resources include seven affiliated hospitals and a library that houses more than 6.83 million volumes. Among the laboratory facilities at Zhejiang University are more than a dozen national key labs that focus on different specialty areas, such as the State Key Lab of Clean Energy Utilization, the State Key Lab of Rice Biology and the State Key Lab of Modern Optical Instrumentation.
